Tønder Museum was established in the gatehouse of the remains of Tønder Castle, which was demolished in 1750, as well as in a newly constructed building designed by local architect Lauritz Thaysen in 1923.
The museum was quickly characterized as a museum for the applied arts of western Sønderjylland. Cultural items such as furniture, faiences, tiles, and silver objects and later also lace along with other textiles from this area were collected and exhibited.
In connection with the establishment of the Museum Sønderjylland, the museum's area of collection expanded to the entire region's cultural heritage of applied arts.
Thus, visitors are presented with a fine impression of Southern Jutland's wealthy past.
Various other aspects of life in the western part of Southern Jutland over the past 450 years are presented in special exhibitions and the water tower from 1902 contains a large permanent collection of the best chairs designed by the world-famous furniture designer Hans J. Wegner.
From atop the 40 meters tall tower visitors can enjoy a wonderful view of the town of Tønder and the marshland.
